The Video Platform Grants The Community Authority to Reduce Artificial Intelligence-Made Media in Their Feeds

Users will soon have a fresh option that enables them to reduce the volume of AI-made media appearing in their streams. This step comes as the platform disclosed that it currently hosts over 1 bn AI-generated clips.

Testing and Rollout

This change is being tested over the coming weeks before a widespread release. This development coincides with a surge in content created by AI, driven by new video-generation tools.

The Broader AI Trend

Recent reports that approximately one in 10 of the fastest-growing content creators on a competing service exclusively feature AI-generated videos. A significant portion of this content is classified as mass-produced AI material, a label for substandard, mass-produced content that is typically illogical or bizarre.

Our research shows that numerous viewers like content created using AI tools, from AI artwork to informative clips, and we want to provide users the power to see more or less of that, according to their own likes,” said a company executive.

AI on the Platform

The platform shared that there are now 1.3 billion videos on its network identified as made with AI. Collectively, over 100 mn pieces of content are uploaded to the app every day, making AI content a minor percentage of its total content library.

How to Adjust Settings

Members will be in a position to limit or boost the volume of artificial media they watch by opening the topic control option in the app and selecting AI-made media. Further subjects that currently be controlled under the tool include politics, style, beauty, and dance.

AI Disclosure Rules

TikTok’s rules oblige creators to identify lifelike AI-made content, and it forbids dangerous deepfakes of public figures or crisis events. Any realistic AI video that is unmarked can be removed under its user guidelines.

Additionally, the service will henceforth add an “AI-made” label to content created with its own AI tools, or flagged by an cross-platform project for identifying artificial media. This step is intended to help prevent users from trying to bypass the disclosure requirement.

Responsible AI Funding

TikTok is also launching a $2m AI literacy fund for experts and groups to produce educational content about responsible artificial intelligence. This project will support non-profit groups dedicated to training computer science.

Platform Protection

TikTok has justified its content review process, following debate over intentions to cut jobs for hundreds of review team members in the United Kingdom. It is set to cut hundreds of positions in its trust and safety division in London, with trade unions and internet security professionals raising concerns that people are being substituted by AI moderation.

A company official stated that human moderation would still have a role, but AI can shield workers by removing the most harmful content before it has to be seen by people. The company reported a 76% decrease in shocking and graphic content reviewed by safety staff over the previous year due to intervention by its AI tools.

We believe it is crucial to integrate staff and AI to maintain a secure environment,” she said. “We’ll have people as part of that process, but we further consider it’s highly necessary to minimize viewing of unsafe media as rapidly, which is where a lot of the machine support is really helping us process content quickly.”
